What is the South Asian Spelling Bee?
The South Asian Spelling Bee is a contest catered toward to the South Asian population in the US where the contestants are asked to spell English words orally.
What are the requirements to participate in the Bee?
All South Asian children up to 14yrs will be eligible for the 2008 State Farm South Asian Spelling Bee. Please refer to eligibility criteria in the RULES section for more details.
When and where will the Spelling Bee be held?
The dates and centers are as follows:
June 28, 2008 – North Brunswick, NJ
June 29, 2008- Rockville, MD (DC metro area)
July 12, 2008- Plano TX (Dallas Area)
July 13, 2008- Stafford, TX (Houston Area)
July 19, 2008- Palatine, IL (Chicago Area)
July 20, 2008-Briarcliff Manor, NY
July 26, 2008- Artesia, CA (LA Area)
July 27, 2008- Hayward, CA (Bay Area)
How will these contests be conducted?
Spellers will be asked to register online at our website: www.southasianspellingbee.com and enroll for participation at their nearest center. Subsequently on the designated day, they will be administered a written examination from which top scorers will then advance to the Oral round. The regional champ and two runners up will then move on to the FINALS contest to be held in NJ.
How do I register for the contests?

If my child is unable participate in the contest, can I get a refund of the registration fees paid?
No. The registration fee is non-refundable.
What is the deadline for registration?
The deadline for registration is 48 hours prior to the chosen regional center for participation. For example, if you chose for your speller to participate in the Chicago area regionals, they should be registered no later than 12 noon on July 17 2008.
What are payments options for registration fee?
The payments will be made online through your VISA, Master Card or American Express Card.
How do I know my registration status?
Once the registration is complete, an automated email will be sent to you confirming the receipt of payment and your regional center.
What if I get an error in using Online Registration?
In case of errors, please call 848-248-4139 for customer service.
I do not live in the same city where the South Asian Spelling Bee is held, what do I do?
We have taken into account the major South Asian hubs across the US and narrowed down to 8 centers nationwide. You can chose any regional center as per your convenience. Any speller can be registered to any ONE of the regional centers even if the speller does not reside in that area. However, ONE spellers can ONLY participate in ONE center for the duration of the 2008 contest.
Do you have categories for different age group?
There are no different categories and all children will participate together.
What is the agenda for the day?
10:30 am – Registration
12:00 noon- Written test starts
1:00pm- Written test concludes
1:00pm-3:00pm- Tests are evaluated and any tie-breakers are administered. It is recommended that everyone stay on-site during this time. Cafeteria services will be available.
4:30pm- The Oral round starts. Family, friends and well wishers are encouraged to attend.
